The Medical Microbiology Laboratory is a full-service laboratory located in the Central Laboratory and serves pediatric patients with infections seen in inpatient and outpatient facilities of the hospital.  Our staff processes over 150,000 specimens per year and is open 24 hours a day to accession and process specimens. Our laboratory provides timely, accurate, and medically relevant results to aid in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases. The laboratory also provides support to the infection control program by screening for multi-resistant organisms and examining how infections spread throughout the hospital.

Testing includes:

  • Automated  and conventional culture of  blood, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), stool, urine, tissue and other human samples for aerobicand fastidious bacterial species as well as fungus.
  • Automated  and conventional culture of  human samples  for Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • Identification and antibiogram of various bacterial isolates from samples by using automated identification and susceptibility testing system.
  • Direct staining for bacteria and fungi via Gram stain, acid fast stain
  • Rapid detection of rotavirus and adenovirus virus from stool.
  • Examination of stool and other body fluids for ova and parasites
